Good News for Internet Video Sharing — Maybe…
According to this article on cnet, “a federal appeals court has upheld a controversial court decision that said file-sharing software programs such as Grokster or Morpheus are legal”. So what does this mean for ReplayTV? Internet Video Sharing (IVS) on the Replay TV is basically a peer to peer file-sharing system that seems to fall under the courts decision. From the article:
Following the lead of a lower-court decision last year, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Los Angeles said on Thursday that peer-to-peer software developers were not liable for any copyright infringement committed by people using their products, as long as they had no direct ability to stop the acts.
and:
Attorneys for the file-sharing companies welcomed the decision, saying it would apply to other technologies that have been targeted by copyright holders, such as ReplayTV.
Of course, now with Tivo getting approval from the FCC for file sharing (with limitations), maybe this will open the door for the return of IVS to the ReplayTV.
