Tivo in Turmoil

Just saw this interesting article over at from the San Francisco Chronicle about the recent resignations at Tivo and the problems they are facing from increasing competition. Belive it or not, it says in the article that one analyst believes that Tivo is currently spending $400 for each new customer in return for an average $9 per month subscription fee. I know that they are deperately trying to increase their subscriber base and get everbody on a Tivo before the cable companies can get them on their $9.95 per month Scientific Atlanta DVR boxes.

Maybe this is a good thing for ReplayTV — I don’t believe they are spending anywhere near $400 to get new subscribers and maybe the niche is the high end audio/videophile who knows that the cable box dvr’s are garbage and is willing to buy something better. This isn’t a huge market, but it might be enough for one company.
