Apple to buy ReplayTV ?

Steve Jobs recently demoed the new version of iTunes v4.9. While there are many new interesting features in this version of iTunes, including podcasting support with the ability for users to not only download but also upload their own podcasts to the iTunes music store.

But probably the most interesting piece of information to come out of this demo by Jobs was his comment that Apple was interested in possibly buying or producing a Tivo like device. Maybe they will look at ReplayTV? I think that ReplayTV would make the perfect acquisition for Apple and they could also be the savior for ReplayTV!

Apple’s not in the market for hardware, period. Software firms, yes. If Jobs does it, the device will be integrated with a download service for content. The hardware may be flexible if you supply your own content. But, I don’t think Jobs wants to get too close to violating content copyright issues as he’s in the content business himself. The solution will likely involve a new DRM scheme as well. Hopefully he can negotiate the flexibility that users want within the DRM limits. Apple’s iTunes are pretty flexible in it’s ownership features as well as broadcasting. There’s a big race on right now with Microsoft to dominate entertainment in the home through the technology. Microsoft is taking a proprietary approach with the media format; but is marketing it through licensing. Apple has given their technology to a standards board for video content and HD. They are hoping their quality with a consortium licensing and developing the standard will be more attractive.
