Dead Batteries equals Dead ReplayTV

I never really thought of this before, but after reading this article about swapping the front faceplate on your Tivo at PVRBlog, I realized that the same problem could occur with a ReplayTV. Should the remote die or the batteries die, basically your ReplayTV is useless until you get a new remote or batteries.

While the battery problem is not that big a deal (note to self: need to pick up spare batteries for the ReplayTV remote), should the remote for your ReplayTV die there is really no way to control it since there are no controls on the front panel other than the power button. And I’ve heard many complaints about the quality of the remote that comes with the ReplayTV, especially the select button in the center.

One of the options is to get a higher quality universal remote to replace the ReplayTV remote, but I know that alot of the less expensive univeral remotes that are available don’t have codes for the ReplayTV — or if they do, they can’t control all of the functions of the ReplayTV — for example, the Zones button.

Maybe we need to compile a list of replacement remotes for the ReplayTV and how many of the functions of the original ReplayTV remote the replacement remote can duplicate — I’m going to look into starting a page here with this list, possibly gathering information on the remotes from the ReplayTV Forum at AVSForums. If you have any firsthand experience with a remote and the ReplayTV, let me know and I will add it to the list.

If you liked this article, buy me a coffee! :)

I have been using the URC MX 700 for 2 years with a ReplayTV 3060 & 4536 in the same wall unit. Replay specific files are available on www.remotecentral.com. All of the commands are present, laid out in an intuitive manner. There is one for 2 Replays in the same space.

There are smaller remotes that have Replay commands built in. Even Radio Shack has them

There is a program called DVArchive that can be installed on a PC for extraction of your digital recorded programs. This also contains a very good remote control utility for controlling the replay. I use it to turn the replay off or change the channel while the kids are watching it as a joke.. HAHA Granted it’s not as easy as a remote control but it works until you get your new remote from ReplayTV.

DVArchive is great. I use it all the time to download shows to my computer, schedule recordings, and see my upcoming shows that are scheduled to record. I have tried to use the remote in DVArchive, but unless the computer is in the same room as the ReplayTV, it’s kind of hard to use. I do like the idea about changing the channel or turning the ReplayTV off as a joke — I’ll have to try that the next time my wife is watching TV …
