DVR Shipments Up Over 140% in 2004

There is an article on Digital Home Canada about a report from research firm In-Stat that over 11.4 million DVRs were shipped to retailers in 2004. This was up from 4.6 million in 2003 and 1.5 million in 2002.

These numbers are for worldwide shipments (not just Canada). The article goes on to say that the trend in DVR units is towards integrated set top boxes — cable boxes and DVD players that include DVR functionality, although they do say there is still a market for high end stand alone DVR units such as ReplayTV and Tivo.

A 140% increase in shipments is a huge number, but the report also says that they believe there is still room for substantial growth in the DVR market with the increasing consumer acceptance and demand for DVRs.
