More Fallout From The Supreme Court File Sharing Ruling

As the new Supreme Court File Sharing Ruling settles in, more and more reasons why this is bad are coming out. There is a good article on Business Week that talks about how the new ruling will stifle innovation. As an example, the article uses ReplayTV to show how a large company or organization can use litigation to stop a company (such as Sonicblue) from innovating and producing new technologies that threaten their business model.

Sonicblue spent years and millions of dollars in legal costs only to end up bankrupt trying to defend their product and the new technology they had developed. The new ruling on file sharing will only help to continue this trend, as it will allow large companies to force small startups and individuals to go bankrupt attempting to defend their innovations.

We definitely don’t want copyright infringement, but we also don’t want to stop innovation and progress — there has to be a compromise somewhere in this mess!
