Skipping TV Ads Illegal in Japan
PVR Wire is reporting that Japanese Broadcasters are contending that fast forwarding through TV Commercials is a violation of Japanese copyright law. They are even having some sort of a “TV Commercial Holiday” – August 28th has been designated “TV Commercial Day” in Japan to commemorate the anniversary of the first TV Commercial ever shown on Japanese TV.
I don’t know much about Japanese Copyright Law, but I can’t imagine what could possibly be in there that would make it illegal to skip TV Ads. Plus, as pointed out in the PVR Wire article, what other ramifications are there due to this claim? If I record a commercial I like on my ReplayTV and play it back later or share it on Poopli, is that illegal? Isn’t this something they would want? Will I be arrested for downloading a TV Commercial off of the Internet?
It all seems kind of stupid to me.
