Dish Network has released an upgraded version of their HD DVR 942 and not only do the new DVR features compare favorably with Tivo and ReplayTV, but it also has features built into the receiver that put it ahead of other stand alone satellite receivers.

The Dish DVR 942 is their top of the line High Definition Satellite Receiver with a built in DVR. It comes with a 250GB Hard Drive and can record up to 25 hours of HD programming or 180 hours of standard definition programming. This upgraded version of the DVR 942 has many new features, but in particular two stand out:

• Three built in tuners – Most of the cable DVRs and the DirectTV / Tivo receivers have two tuners, but the 942 has three integrated tuners so that you can record up to three different programs at the same time. There is a limitation of only one HD recording at a time, but you can still record two other standard definition programs concurrently.
• Multiple Televisions with One Receiver – The DVR 942 has outputs for multiple televisions and can connect them by coaxial cable. If you already have cable connections in your house, you can use these to connect televisions in more than one room to the DVR 942 and they can all be controlled seperately using the integrated tuners and an RF remote.

These two features alone put the Dish DVR 942 ahead of the DVR units offered by cable companies. The Scientific Atlanta units still only have two integrated tuners and they are just coming out with multi-room units, but these units require a client set top box in for each additional TV. Plus, the Dish DVR 942 includes many interface features such as searching by title, by theme, and even partial titles that either are not available on the Cable DVR boxes or are so poorly implemented that they are basically unusable.

As for competing with standalone DVR units such as ReplayTV and Tivo, the three integrated tuners, HD recording, and an improved interface and search functions make the Dish DVR 942 a unit to consider when shopping for a new DVR.
