DVR Users Have Doubled In The Past Year

According to a new study from Leichtman Research Group, both DVR and VOD users have doubled in the past year.

While this study has some good information about the increase in DVD and VOD (Video On Demand) users — I didn’t think anyone really watched VOD — more interesting is the study’s findings on the viewing habits of DVR users. 88% of DVR users say they usually skip TV commercials when watching a show recorded on their DVR.

Even though advertisers would have you believe that viewers not watching TV commercials is due to the DVR, it turns out that 56% of the DVR users said that even before they had their DVR they didn’t watch TV commercials. They either changed the channel during commercials or they avoided watching the commercials alltogether by leaving the room and going to the kitchen, bathroom, etc.

I think that it must be painfully obvious by now to the advertisers that they need to stop focusing on stopping us from fast forwarding through commercials with our DVRs and start finding ways to make us want to watch commercials. No matter what they to do prevent it, consumers are not going to watch commercials unless they want to — another channel is just a push of the remote away.
