DVR Usage Equals VOD Purchases

File this one under the “Of Course I Knew That — Didn’t I?” category.

A new survey of Video on Demand (VOD) Users shows that DVR Users watch more VOD than non DVR users. This includes not only free VOD programming but also paid VOD programs.

When you think about it, this seems to make alot of sense. VOD on most cable systems provides similar features to standalone DVR units and provides the option to pay to watch a newly released movie. The main problem with VOD is that the technology is currently not very good. It’s still relatively new and not very mature. While it does share similar features with DVRs, the user experience is definitely not the same. Try fast forwarding or rewinding while watching a program on VOD — there is a noticeable lag when controlling VOD and the video quality isn’t the best.

It’s possible that someday, when the technology matures, that VOD could replace standalone DVR units as some type of “Remote DVR Service” — but it’s definitely not there yet.
