Tivo Confirms New Features

In their latest Tivo Subscriber Newsletter, Tivo has announced that they will be rolling out new features in the fall:

clever broadband features, including: Getting select TV shows and programming via broadband to your TiVo box — Games, streaming radio, podcasting, and more …

This pretty much confirms the speculation from last week when Tivo sent out an update to their privacy policy that hinted at new features such as downloading content to your Tivo.

It’s going to be very interesting to see how this is handled by Tivo — will this be pay per view content or could it possibly be free with commercials that can’t be fast forwarded through? The best solution might be a combination of the two — possibly even a choice between free content with ads or pay content without ads.

I’m sure in the beginning they will be offering at least some free content to get users to try out these new services.

This also makes me think of another possibility — could Tivo become the iTunes of the TV World? If this becomes popular, maybe all TV shows (including older shows) will be available for purchase and download in a Tivo TV Store.
