First Apple and Now Google
Just recently, there was speculation that Apple was possibly looking to aquire a DVR company (ReplayTV, Tivo, etc.) so that they would have the technology for an iTunes like video store. Now it appears that Google may also be interested. According to this post over at PVR Wire, there are rumors that Google may use some cash from an upcoming stock sale to purchase Tivo or another video and dvr related company.
I’m not sure exactly why Google would be interested in getting into the DVR industry. Recently they launched a beta video service where you can search for videos that Google has indexed and play them online using a free Google branded video player. Maybe they are planning to expand this to include pay per view content and they want the DVR technology to use in some sort of Video on Demand service.
Of course, this is all speculation, but I think that Google may be starting to get involved in too may different businesses. I know that (so far) they have tried to stay close to their search roots, but it seems like they are starting to wander into new and possibly dangerous territory.
