Free Tivo Everywhere!
Everywhere you look lately, there is another offer for a Free Tivo! From the JCPenney and Dockers offer — buy some pants and get a free Tivo — to the VCR funeral at digitallife — bury your VCR and get a free Tivo — now there is no excuse for not having a DVR.
It seems like Tivo has taken a page from the videogame hardware manufacturers book — give away the hardware and make money on the software (games). In this case, give away the Tivo and make it back on the subscription fees. Since a Tivo is basically a doorstop without the subscription to their service, it seems like a good gamble on Tivo’s part. What remains to be seen is will this get Tivo the needed market share or are they too late — the cable companies have already been giving away free DVR’s, just charging for the service — of course you don’t get to keep the DVR from your cable company if you cancel the service, but it’s useless without the service anyways so who would want to keep it?
Get your free Tivo while you can — who knows when it might end!
