New DirecTV DVR to Finally Be Available Next Week
It has been a long time coming, but finally DirecTV’s new DVR units will be available next week in stores. These are the new DVRs that use software from NDS, another News Corporation owned company that is also the parent company of DirecTV.
This was announced in the DirecTV Third Quarter Report. They also announced that they would be introducing new products at the Consumer Electronics Show in January that would allow recorded shows from their DVR to be viewed on portable devices. Exactly what this will be and what portable devices it will support remains to be seen, but I think I see the Video iPod in the future for DirecTV DVR owners.
It will be interesting to see what features are actually supported by this new DVR when it actually is available. While it seems certain that it will have dual tuner capability, so far there is no indication that it will be able to record High Definition TV shows. Now that I’ve had a Scientific Atlanta 8300HD DVR that can record HD shows, this will be a big negative – once you’ve started watching and recording HDTV, there’s no going back!
