A Great Idea From Sky Plus - Schedule A Recording From A Promo
This just in from Sky Plus, the UK Digital Satellite Service. They have just added a new feature to their combination satellite receivers and DVR units — the ability for users to schedule a recording from a trailer or promo!
While watching trailers or promos for certain TV shows, users will be able to schedule a recording for the show by just pressing the record button during the promo. This is a great idea! Sky Plus has definitely one upped Tivo with this one. Usually, Tivo is the leader when it comes to new and innovative features, but this is one time they have been beaten to the punch. This is such a simple but great feature that Tivo definitely needs to copy. It would be one more unique feature that would definitely put them ahead of all the other American DVRs on the market.

Actually, TiVo has had this capability for *years*. TiVoMatic icons - on some promos, usually NBC, you’ll see “Press Thumbs Up To Record” and pressing thumbs up jumps straight to the recording screen to setup a recording for that show, get a Season Pass, etc. It has been in TiVo’s software for a long time, available to any network that wants to use it.
They also do promos in the Showcases or TiVo Central Promos and they can have a similar recording option to jump right to recording from the promo.
TiVo doesn’t need to copy this - they invented it.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that it’s time for me to get a TiVo. I didn’t even realize that TiVo already had this feature and there are probably alot more that I don’t know about. I love my ReplayTV, but now that they are no longer making new ReplayTV boxes (just the hardware), I think it’s time to take the leap and get a TiVo.

Well, if your RTV is still working, you might wait for the Seires3 later this year - dual tuners, HDTV, etc.
But there is a lot out there for TiVo now - Apps.tv, Galleon.tv, more HME applications like AudioFaucet, etc. And they keep adding content partners as with Yahoo and Live365. The software itself continues to steadily improve - though never as fast as some would like.
